Warner Soccer League 'Coaching' Terms
Common Terms recommended for use by coaches and parents.
When encouraging players use positive words, for instance, nicely done, good job etc.
1. Head Up : Refers to players receiving, dribbling, passing with their head up. The correct position.
2. Step to the Ball: Refers to players taking positive steps to the ball to challenge and win the ball. No standing and waiting.
3. Turn: Information given to a player when they have time and space and are able to turn and keep the ball.
4. Technical Terms for players:
Dribble the Ball: Movement of the ball with the feet.
Pass/Receive: Controlling the ball and passing to a teammate.
Shoot: A shot toward the goal.
Head: Playing the ball with the head.
Players do not KICK the ball, Kick has no purpose.
5. Play Passes/Make Passes: Encourage players to pass the ball.
6. Push Up or Move Up: Encourage players to move up and down the field as a unit.
7. Shape: Refers to the position of players on the field.
8. Teamwork: Refers to players helping and working with each other.
